Reduce Your Homeowners Insurance Premium With Wind Mitigation

A Wind Mitigation Inspection could save you hundreds of dollars on your insurance premium IF you home was constructed in specific methods that create greater resistance from wind and hurricane damage.

These discounts will be applied when the structure has any or all of the following features and the more the bigger the discount:

Hurricane Clips and/or Hurricane Straps
Hip Roof
Reinforced Roof Decking
Shutter Protection Over Your Windows
Impact Resistant Glazing on Windows
And Other Wind Resilient Construction Methods

These discounts are available for Single Family Homes, Town Homes, Condominiums, Multi-Family Buildings, and Commercial Buildings.

According to Florida Statute 627.0629, ALL insurance companies are required to offer Florida homeowners “discounts, credits, or other rate differentials…” for particular construction techniques that help to reduce wind damage caused by hurricanes, tropical storms and other windstorms related claims.

How Does It Work?

These discounts are applied only to the “wind portion” of your total insurance premium. The wind portion of your premium depends on where your structure is located. In high wind prone areas this part of the premium will be higher – as much as 70%. In lower risk areas such as N. Central Florida it can be as low as 15%.

The more expensive the wind portion of your premium the higher the discount will be.  Higher value homes and other buildings will have higher insurance premiums so the discounts will be greater.

Do I Qualify for Wind Mitigation Discounts?

These discounts are offered because wind- resistive buildings have fewer windstorm claims.  This reduces the cost to insurance companies and then those savings can be passed on to the consumer. Many Florida Homeowners and have strengthened their existing structures and are then able to take advantage of these discounts as these discounts apply to both new construction built to the new statewide Florida Building Code, and existing structures condos and homes built prior to 2002.

Building Features  that SAVE YOU MONEY:

Roof Decking that has been installed with larger nails or screws with the required closer spacing

Hurricane Clips and/or Straps that secure the roof structure to the supporting walls.

Full or Partial protection of windows and doors with impact resistant glazing or other protection methods.

Secondary water resistance barrier that prevents the roof from leaking if the shingles are blown off in a windstorm.

How Do I Get The Discount?

Have a Florida Certified Wind Home Inspector verify your home building feature(s) to get the discount applied. If you are in the Lake City, Fl area we have someone who will only charge for the inspection IF he is able to verify discount features. If he can’t save you money, then he won’t charge you.

How Much for the Inspection?

As of September 2011 he charges a flat rate of $100 and the inspection takes no more than 1 hour.
